The
thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck just below the larynx. The
thyroid gland is one of the endocrine organs; it absorbs iodine from the
bloodstream and produces thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones regulate a person’s
metabolism. A normal thyroid gland appears butterfly-shaped and has a weight of
10 g–15 g. A healthy thyroid gland is not palpable. If a tumor develops in the
thyroid, it is felt as a lump in the neck.
